Amber museum

The amber coastline of the Baltic Sea stores over 90 % of the world’s amber deposits. The Amber Museum, housed in an 1853 fortified tower, exhibits the most interesting samples of the sunny stone: fossil inclusions, oddly colored stones and the second largest amber piece (4.28 kg) in the world. It is located in the city center, on the shore of Lake Verkhneye.

A landmark by itself, the old city wall built in 1862 and accommodates a museum of history of Königsberg in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It’s also worth to see the Knight’s Hall that tells the story of  the Teutonic Order and an awesome holographic movie about the Prussian origins of the Russian Kaliningrad and Polish Elbląg.

Altes Haus

Tradesman Gustav Grossman’s apartment takes you to the everyday life of a Königsberg citizen of the early 20th century. No showcases, no fencing – the miraculously spared authentic furniture and personal belongings can be examined very closely, and you’ll steep in the pre-WWI lifestyle of the herren und damen. Entry is by guided tour (in Russian), and visitors are given more or less free rein to sit on the furniture and get a feel of the days gone by.

Immanuel Kant Museum in Königsberg Cathedral

The cathedral presents several exhibitions dedicated to the Kneiphof community philosopher Immanuel Kant, and the reconstruction of the cathedral itself. Spread across 3 floors, the museum covers the history of Kant Island (or Kneiphof), the famous Wallenrodt Library, which was founded by Prussian Chancellor Martin von Wallenrodt in 1623, and the last floor dedicated to the philosopher, with various bust sculptures and, rather gruesomely, his death mask. Hardcore fans may enjoy an organ concert or take a tour to examine the musical instrument in detail.
