Religious diversity of Kazan

Bringing together the Tatar and Russian heritage, Kazan has been home to people of completely different worldviews since the ancient times. The ‘third Russian capital’ will amaze you with its cultural diversity, especially if you have a chance to visit one of the main cathedrals and mosques and get to learn about the unique traditions, associated with these beliefs. Curious? Here’s a short list of religious institutions of exceptional interest.

Orthodox – the Annunciation Cathedral

You definitely can’t miss this place, as it’s conveniently located on the Kazan Kremlin premises. This white Cathedral with 5 sky blue onion-shaped domes is the oldest stone building in the city. The interior is full of golden Tatar ornaments and green backgrounds, which is not common for Russian churches, thereby making the decorations so exceptional – a true cultural mix!

Islam – the Kul Sharif Mosque

After learning about the Orthodox traditions, move forward to the Islamic culture – the main Mosque of Kazan and one of the largest in Europe is located nearby, in the Kazan Kremlin. This ‘eastern beauty’ can easily accommodate 6 000 worshippers. Check out the interior from the balcony, although it’s necessary for women to cover their heads and legs (clothes are provided). For inquisitive minds we suggest visiting the museum on the ground floor.

Lutheranism  – the Church of St. Catherine

Opened after a major restoration, it’s a simple, sweet red and white building with 3 pointed towers and a heart in the center of the facade. Just like many other  Russian churches, it stopped operating during Soviet times, and was handed over to be used by the police service, and as a gym and club. Now it had been brought back to the fold. They frequently organize pipe organ charity concerts, so pay a visit!

26 Ulitsa Karla Marksa

While having dozens of cathedrals and mosques, Kazan has only one Jewish community center; therefore, taking we strongly encourage you to visit it as well! Other – The Temple of All Religions

For the sake of friendship and unity of all the nations residing in Kazan, the Universal temple was built. It means that an Orthodox church, a synagogue, a mosque, a pagoda and many other kinds of religious institutions will be found side by side under its roof. Frankly speaking, as it is now, it’s more like a creative project, a museum of culture of the human race. The Temple hasn’t been completed yet, but hopefully it’ll become an amusing place for everyone, irrespective of their religion.

Address:

4 Staroe Arakchino

Hours:
