A local’s guide around Winzavod

Winzavod means ‘Wine factory’ in Russian, named thus because this was once a beer and wine factory.  Now, it is one of the biggest centers that support contemporary Russian art. Different types of modern art are united here – photographers, artists, designers all find support at Winzavod.

The center holds exhibitions, seminars, lectures, and workshops. There are designer shops and book shops with unique items and unexpected ideas. Bottom line, if contemporary art is your thing, then this should definitely be a point of call for you.

Galleries and studios

Start your tour with the galleries. There are more than 10 galleries with temporary exhibitions. Each of them presents really unique and surprising artistic methods and views on the world.

Bold ideas by modern painters make them unite traditional genres into something new, express their thoughts using ordinary objects in unnatural circumstances. If you want to see the works of the young authors, go to the ARTIST Gallery (entrance 22), or the OSNOVA Gallery (entrance 22), a synthesis of the numerous artistic styles can be found at the XL Gallery (entrance 5).

The paintings on the wall change regularly and who knows, maybe, you’ll get a chance to see an artist at work and even talk to them.

Graffiti as an art has received considerable exposure and recognition here: graffiti artists who have showcased their work here include Timofey Radya, Alexey Kallima, Ivan Ninety. Here, this form of art that has unfortunately, in most cases, been confined to the shadows of the night, is given a chance to stand tall among other forms of art.

Cafes

Art fills your soul, but it can’t fill your belly, so if you’re hungry, drop by one of the cafes here. Many recommend the ‘Barrel wine’.

Being a former wine factory, the center has to have a wine bar. And here it is. Go inside and you’ll literally feel like you’re in a wine barrel. Of course, a good choice of wine is offered here, and there are meetings with oenologists and wine-makers. If you prefer beer and snacks, go to KraftWerkBar. Drink coffee and eat a dessert at Moscincofee or at the scandinavian-style Freesbee coffee.
