The museum was opened in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the first orbital space flight by Yuri Gagarin. It’s pretty easy to get to: when you exit the VDNH station, you won’t miss the magnificent Monument to the Conquerors of Space, resembling a starting rocket; the museum occupies its base.

The exhibition is divided into several thematic zones, disclosing different aspects of the space program from the beginning to the latest developments. “The morning of cosmic era” zone showcases the items connected to the early period of the space endeavor: the initial equipment, spaceship models, stuffed figures of the first dogs in space – Belka and Strelka. “The creators of the cosmic era” section gives a detailed look into the lives of the first space engineers behind the Soviet space program, including Tsiolkovsky and Korolev.

The zones named “Cosmonautics for humanity” and “The international cooperation” contain various models of satellites and rockets; moonwalkers, moon ground samples, remains of meteorites. Probably the most amusing section is “The cosmic house on the orbit”, uncovering the everyday life of astronauts: you may see a space fridge, a zero-gravity chess game, a special space table, space suits. You can even enter and take a picture in the base module of the iconic “Mir” space station!

Overall, this is a must-visit place, especially for kids. There are signs and explanations in English, so it’s not only fun, but educational too. Before you leave, visit the small souvenir shop where you can buy genuine space food in tubes!
