Where to have specialty coffee in Moscow

Moscow is definitely not found lacking when it comes to coffee shops, it’s just a matter of finding the one you like. Here is a quick rundown of the spots we like to help you narrow down your search for the best coffee spot in town.

The Black

It’s named after their signature coffee and points to the fact that here you won’t find a cappuccino or a latte, but you’ll get a cup of excellent black coffee that is brewed using one of the latest ‘slow brewing’ methods. The Black is owned by 5 friends and has recently joined forces with the beer bar “Pine and Lime” to take over a small space where you can always get their specialty coffee and mingle with the lively crowd of beer drinkers outside, as well.

Les

This unpretentious coffee shop looks like it materialized out of a picture in Kinfolk magazine. Tiny space with white brick walls, wooden furniture and a menu scribbled on a blackboard, the coffee shop offers not only coffee but coffee masterclasses as well. You can also attend masterclasses in sculpting, drawing, and acting while having a cup of their delicious coffee. On the weekends, you can also enjoy performances by DJs. In any case…back to the coffee part, it’s the only place that roasts green coffee beans on the spot. Each coffee order is made using only one coffee bean variety to give you the opportunity to experience its pure flavour.

Les in the Moscow Museum

Another location of Les coffee shop you need to know about since you are likely to find yourself in Moscow Museum during sightseeing. Apart from the specialty coffee approach described above, this spot is also an opportunity to refuel with some healthy-ish pastries and snacks and in this specific location, grab a seat al fresco.

Upside Down Cake & Co

This place is not just about cakes and cupcakes and an interior with a 1950s retro feel, but about taking coffee seriously as well. Many recommend the Aeropress Ethiopia Bokassa said to be just as strong, but not as bitter as an espresso. All coffees are prepared from freshly roasted coffee beans. The dessert menu is also a definite must try, particularly for those with sweet tooth since there is quite a choice to spoil yourselves with – the menu lists 11 kinds of cupcakes and 16 kinds of cakes.

Caffe del Parco

This place is known not only for its convenient location in the Museon Park, but for its truly outstanding coffee. The guys here have a special brewing philosophy – that’s the main secret of the quality. Also, you can have some sweet snacks here: Belgian waffles, croissants and all kinds of pastries.

A second location has recently opened on the Krymskaya Embankment.

West 4. Coffee Brew Bar

Inspired by the New York vibes, the owners not only named this placed ‘West 4’ but also designed it to feature exposed brick walls and black and white posters of NY. Music is something West 4 is specifically known for: during the day vinyl records of jazz and soul are spun and on Friday and Saturday night you can enjoy live jazz concerts. Yet consistently excellent coffee is what puts this coffee shop firmly on the capital’s coffee maps. In the spirit of this place, the beans are mostly shipped from the US as well.

Double B

Double B has grown into a very successful chain, breathing down the neck of Starbucks. The master of the coffee shop Olga Melik-Kazakova is the most famous Russian barista. She and her team (consisting only of barista champions) constantly visit coffee plantations in Kenya, Ethiopia, Salvador and Honduras to choose the best coffee beans themselves. The guys are mad about coffee and brew it in different alternative methods to reveal the most delicate tastes of the beans.

Apart from coffee they sell good Chinese tea.

OMG Coffee

The menu lists over 20 coffee beverages, including the third wave brews (The Chemex or Pour Over brewing) and Vietnamese coffee (made with condensed milk) apart from traditional cappuccinos and lattes. There is a wide selection of food (burgers and salads) too. All this choice makes you say OMG every time you come here, making it a perfect place for a more substantial energy refuel than brew ont he go.

Nude Bar

This cozy modern spot will probably make you stay longer than initially planned. It is debatable whether ‘Nude’ is a wine bar or a coffee shop, and since they have an excellent coffee selection and quality, ‘Nude’ made it on this list. Apart from coffee and wine you can get decent snacks and meals from their concise menu revolving mostly around breakfasts and snacks. You can never go wrong with eggs Benedict, especially at this spot!
