The owners of Villa Sumosan, the Volkovs, started their business back in the 1990s. They made London citizens fall in love with Russian food, by opening a successful restaurant called “Slavyanka”. Quality definitely takes precedence, and given the number of guests their restaurants welcome, this standard holds true!

The chef  of the restaurant is the famous Bubker Belkhit. Originally from Northern Africa, he gained a wealth of experience in Japanese cuisine. His creative spirit and hunger to experiment turned the Sumosan restaurants into the most successful sushi places in Moscow.

Although this place can be considered luxurious and expensive, they tried to include democratic positions to the menu as well. While the King Crab salad ($8), Sashimi salad ($13), as well as some other seafood dishes may be a bit pricey, you can still choose from a wide variety of appetizers, first and second dishes that are more budget friendly and still give you the opportunity to admire the chef’s skills. Here you can enjoy fresh light appetizers, with wine during warm summer evenings.

Maria Zhukova’s design agency is the brainchild behind this restaurant’s interior. Panoramic windows in combination with simple dark furniture sets look modern and stylish. The restaurant also has a terrace and a garden, which are simply a must for any restaurant during summer.

The restaurant’s sushi and rolls are phenomenal. An interesting thing about them is that you don’t need to dip them into sauce, since there is already an original sauce for every kind of roll inside. Try rolls with sweet shrimps and truffle butter ($8) or “Buba”($8) with perch and pepper. Another highly recommended choice is cristae, with topinambur sauce ($11).

In terms of wine, their card includes some good sparkling wines and Russian wines as well, so you can find something nice and locally produced to pair with your food. Of course, sake wise, you’ve definitely come to the right place, so get ready to sample Japan’s finest!
