Where to eat in Moscow for under $5

Everyone loves to eat out, whenever the opportunity arises. However, it can be a bit strenuous on the pocket, particularly, when you are trying to combine it with exploring a new city. Here are a few budget friendly places that will definitely leave you with enough money to go sightseeing afterwards.

Doodles

This small family cafe with Pan-Asian cuisine was opened by the spouses Galya and Zhenya Denisovy: Galya creates recipes and Zhenya is all about promoting the business. The menu is quite short and only in Russian: three soups (≈$3),  noodles (≈$4), rice, a few salads and a couple of fondants for a dessert are served in eco-friendly utensils. But fear not, all dishes come with photos that will give you an idea of what you are going for. The cafe is quite small, so takeaway is an option, if you can’t get a table.

Rule № 1 – Only organic food;

Rule № 2 – Restaurant quality, without the markup;

Rule № 3 – Fresh food every day.

Evgeny Zhirov is the sous-chef behind the menu, which is quite simple and includes porridges (≈$1,5), omelettes (≈$2), gazpacho (≈$2) and  kuskus with vegetables (≈$2), to mention a few. All the establishments are very down to earth, interior wise and self service is the rule of the day.

Canteen 57

Located in the GUM, Canteen 57 is a Soviet Cafe bringing Soviet dishes to visitors and Moscovites alike, since 1969.  This is as authentic as Soviet cuisine gets. Locals love this place for the good quality, traditional Russian dishes, nostalgic Soviet atmosphere and low prices. Grab a tray and enjoy popular Russian dishes such as blini, beef stroganoff, olivier and vinegret salads, pickled herring and smoky pea soup, all served up with a healthy dose of communist-era kitsch. The retro posters on the wall send out messages to the proletariat about the benefits of eating healthy, and remind you to clear your plate at the end of the meal. The menu is big, the prices are low, and it’s all about self service: soups start from $2 and sides start from $1,5. Bon appetit, comrade!

Domozhilov

The cafe is a perfect combination of trendy, tasty and moderately priced – brought to you by restaurateur Gennadiy Kostrov in collaboration with chef Ivan Domozhilov.  In other words, the location might be a bit posh, but the prices are not: the food is delicious and the view is amazing. The interior, designed by Bernaskoni, has a sleek industrial touch and features a bar and an open kitchen set against a backdrop of black corrugated metal walls. The menu features classic and international dishes, made from fresh ingredients, and it includes many of chef Domozhilov’s personal favourites. There’s a variety of hamburgers, sandwiches, soups, salads, wok dishes and desserts. The bar also has a good menu, making it an ideal place to meet up for drinks or one of the regular film screenings that are held here.

Lucky Noodles

Small and unassuming, this cafe is a lot more than meets the eye. For starters, should you decide to go downstairs, you’ll end up in a smoky, cozy and mysterious bar.  Upstairs the place looks like one of those local food joints you often see in Hong Kong: plastic chairs and tables, narrow countertop along the wall, a foggy fridge with Chinese beer and a cardboard menu. Prices are ridiculously cheap. For instance, a portion of rich broth with spicy noodles, chunks of beef, chicken or shrimp cost about $2,5, or 3 spicy chicken, seafood and rice patties go for only ≈$1,5.

This is a chain of Japanese fast food cafes famous for their udon noodles. Popular dishes include the ontama bukkake udon (noodles with soft-boiled egg) (≈$2) and tonkatsu udon (noodles in broth from a pork rib with a pickled egg) (≈3).

The Vai-Me

Can healthy and Georgian food go together? Apparently they can, and the owners of Vai-Me seem to have pulled it off quite successfully. This spot has become very popular among locals and tourists. This fast food chain is all about healthy and delicious Georgian food. The place offers something for all: meat-lovers can order the ojahuri with pork (the roast with potatoes, tomatoes, and spices) for only ≈$2,5; vegetarians will definitely like khachapuri with cheese and tomatoes baked from gluten-free flour (≈$3).
