Wining and dining in Moscow

Wine bars come in many shapes, forms and sizes, and contrary to popular opinion, are not limited to the wine connoisseurs. Many are cool and trendy places, devoid of the cellar like interior, and are a perfect spot catch up with friends over a nice glass of wine. These days, many wine bars also offer a worthy food menu. Here is a list of some of our top picks.

Max’s beef for money

This restaurant’s priorities are beef and wine, and Master sommelier-turned-restaurateur Vladimir Basov is the brains behind the concept. Their extensive, 4 page wine list includes  wines from Russia and Slovenia. Like we said, they take their beef seriously as well, and this can clearly be seen in the restaurant’s decor, since an enormous glass curing chamber filled with beef spans one side of the dining room. Aside from the back to reality jolting price tags, the overall feel is that of dinner at a wealthy, eccentric, meat loving person’s house, and definitely worth a visit if your wallet can take the hit.

KM 20

This is a wonderful bar on the top of a store, where seasonal food, fish, seafood, farm food and freshly baked bread are served. It’s a perfect spot for vegetarians, with a good selection of gluten free dishes. The small but good wine card consists of orange, organic and biodynamic wine. The refined interior, with velvet curtains and orange sofas is not the only place where you can sit. In good weather, go upstairs on the roof terrace and enjoy a wonderful view of the city.

Savva

This restaurant, with a summer terrace, in the Metropol hotel, which is near the Bolshoi theatre is one of this city’s best spots. It never gets crowdy and crazy here. The food from chef Andrey Shmakov is quite simple but will impress everyone without exception. Wine options are good and include the classics, but don’t ignore the Russian winemakers, what is a big rarity among wine bars.

Simple wine and bar

This is a bar and a vinotheque under one roof. And it is very convenient especially for wine lovers: choose the bottle that you like from the vinotheque and order it in the bar to go with a dish. The layout is open, vibes are cool and it’s great for groups. Come here with friends and let your night start here. Or maybe just hang out and have some meat or snacks with a glass of wine. People commend the olives, dried tomatoes, and artichokes, and we recommend trying the chef’s tartar.

Pies, wine, and a goose

The wine list of the spot was created by one of best Russian sommeliers and it was his idea to sort wine on the list not by regions but by the shapes of the Riedel glasses. The choice of wine is extensive and consists of New World wines, classical and biodynamic ones.

The food is quite traditional but really great. The chef recommends the meatballs po-kievski with white wine, and greek pies with lamb for the red wine. For champagne buffs, he suggests trying the cherry and liver pie.

The healthy menu of the restaurant consists of dishes for every taste. Basic ingredients and old recipes come to life in the kitchen of the “Geraldine”.  The refined interior has French vibes and is made in the 50-60s style of velvet Paris. The place is ideal for a date or dinner and offers a wide range of wine. Feel that wine is not for you today? Order some cognac and go to the summer terrace to enjoy the warm summer breeze.

White Rabbit

Where to find moose ice cream and frozen coconut fat if not in the “White Rabbit” which is located under a glass dome on the 16th floor of Smolensky Passage? Apart from these items, there is a full dinner menu that follows the rules of high gastronomy. The best part of the wine list consists of the Russian wine. Bring a date or have an informal meeting here. Come late for a magnificent view of the night city.

I Like Wine

It’s pretty obvious from the name what this place is all about. There are 2 ‘I Like Wine’ bars in Moscow, and the mastermind behind them in restaurateur Vladimir Perelman.

In addition to the extensive wine list, an added perk is the fact that you can sample any of the wines for free, before making a choice. Food wise, may recommend their carpaccio, steaks and seafood, since they sometimes have good offers on mussels or scallops.

But that’s not all folks! Both establishments hold regular wine tasting events every month (for more info on that, visit their Facebook page), and for those interested in learning a bit more about wine, they also offer an opportunity to join their I Like Wine School.
