Getting around in Nizhniy Novgorod

One of the most ancient cities of trade and handicrafts in Russia, Nizhny Novgorod is located in the confluence of the Oka and the Volga rivers. The city was established in 1221 and is located 400 km away from Moscow. Called Nizhniy for short, it’s a popular tourist destination are here is a quick overview of the city’s infrastructure to help you get around.


Strigino Airport

Strigino Airport is located 18 km south-west of the center of Nizhny Novgorod. It’s story begins in 1923, with the arrival of the first plane from Moscow. The rest as they say, is history.

Transfer options

Bus

There are two regular buses from the airport to the center of Nizhniy Novgorod. Keep in mind that they stop running after 10 PM. The bus stop is opposite the arrivals terminal. Almost all buses and minibuses go past the metro station Park Kultury, which is an excellent transfer point for any route from or to the airport.

Best for: individual tourists with little luggage arriving at daytime; thrifty tourist with extra times to spare; tourists without children

Minibus (marshrutka)

Fixed-route minibuses run quicker than the regular buses because they make fewer stops. They stop right by the regular buses opposite the arrivals terminal of the airport.

Best for: single tourists with little luggage, tourists without children

Taxi and transfer

Strigino Airport’s official taxi service is called ‘Druziya’ and can be ordered at the desk in the left wing of the airport. These black cabs with a red inscription on the side await passengers around the clock at the parking lot by the arrivals terminal. Other taxi and transfer services, including online, are also available.

Best for: families with little children, first-time visitors, disabled people, senior tourists, tourists with a lot of luggage or those who arrive at nighttime

Railway Station

The Moskovskiy Railway Station in Nizhny Novgorod built in 1862 is one of the largest in Russia. Located about 4 km from downtown Nizhniy Novgorod (7a, Ploshchad Revolutsii), it is designed to service 7 mln passengers per year.

Bus Terminals

There are three major bus terminals in Nizhny Novgorod. Check the timetable and the departure terminal before your trip.

Kanavinskaya Bus Terminal (20a, Ulitsa Sovetskaya)

This is a new, modern and well-equipped bus station located in the lower part of the city, 400 m from Nizhniy Novgorod’s Moskovskiy Railway Station.

Shcherbinki Bus Station (234a, Gagarina Prospect)

The recently built Shcherbinki Bus Station is a 15 minute drive from the city center. The station services regular suburban and local buses to more than 76 destinations.

Sennaya Bus Terminal (84, Bolshaya Pecherskaya Ulitsa)

This terminal is located in the upper part of Nizhny Novgorod and services various suburban and local routes.
