Ballerinas in Saint Petersburg Metro

Every year, the Saint Petersburg Metro welcomes spring in a new way. On 1st March 2018, the team launched the Petersburg Metro Aesthetics Project – an Instagram account featuring creative footage shot in the subway that immediately went viral.

Opened in 1955, the Saint Petersburg Metro is one of the most gorgeous in the world. Designed by the country’s best architects and elegantly adorned, 8 of 67 stations are listed as objects of cultural heritage. Honouring the architectural and decorative appearance of the metro, popular musicians, artists and bloggers teamed up to inspire the metro’s passengers with ingenious photos that can be found on the metro’s official Instagram page @metro178. The metro’s Instagram account features breathtaking photos of ballerinas from the Mikhailovsky Theater, dancers from the House of Bonchinche, the famous artist Valerius, conductor and cellist Vadim Kaminsky, fashion blogger Yana Posadskaya and travel blogger Valeria Sokolova, who artistically convey the ambiance and character of each metro station. The Instagram account also contains fun facts about the metro and personal stories of the project’s participants – the metro helped them to find love, inspiration and motivation to keep showing their talent.

These March initiatives have already turned into a tradition of the Saint Petersburg Metro: for example last years famous artists gave flowers to passengers, read romantic poems, and sang live.

First visit the metro’s Instagram page and stop by some of the metro stations to admire them firsthand.
