New Holland

This is a historic, triangular, artificial island in Saint Petersburg, dating back to the 18th century. The island connectes the Moika and Neva rivers. Why the name? Well because with all the canals and shipping facilities it bears resemblance to similar places in Amsterdam. It’s said that Peter I was the mastermind behind this project. No surprise there, he was a great fan of ships. Throughout the years it has been closed and reopened several times. In 2011 it was finally opened to the public and houses several galleries and a museum said to showcase some of Roman Abramovich’s art collections. In the winter, there’s a huge ice skating rink definitely worth trying out.

New Holland. The Bottle house

The building of the former naval prison was designed by 19th century architect Alexander Schtaubert and featured a distinctive rounded form, like the neck of a bottle. Now The Bottle has been given new life. The first floor focuses on the gastronomical experience, with emerging and established restaurants in St Petersburg and Moscow that have taken up space there. The second floor is dedicated to fashion and design. Here you’ll find the Garage Bookstore, an antiques store and a vinyl record shop.  The third floor is all about health and beauty, offering ballet classes, yoga studios, a cycling studio, a beauty salon and a spa. As for the courtyard, it is often used for special events. The stage in the courtyard is a work of art in itself. It is made from larch wood that has been treated using the special Japanese technique of shou sugi ban.

Pizzeria Camorra

This place offers the most budget friendly pizza in town, and is especially worth visiting in the summer, when the tables are placed outside. The pizzeria looks a lot like a typical Berlin cafe, outside and well hidden between the overbearing building surrounding it. The place is quite popular, so you may have to wait a bit for your pizza, but hey, you can pass the time sampling the wide variety of beers available.
