Unusual places in Saint-Petersburg

Your journey to Russia will be more exciting if you include the sights less traversed by the regular tourists. Luckily, Saint-Petersburg offers many an opportunity to do so.

Roofing

This activity is very popular in Saint-Petersburg. There are no skyscrapers downtown, thanks to the decision of the local administration preserve the historical center. So, you can see all the magnificent historical buildings from any roof in that area (but, of course, some of the roofs are better than the others for this purpose).

However, to get on the roof with a really good view in the city center can be quite difficult. That’s why guides who specialize in these tours are highly sought after. Sometimes the administrations of business centers, for example, the Zinger House (a beautiful building with a globe on top right in the beginning of Nevsky Prospekt) lets people on roofs for excursions and even permits them to celebrate important events there.

If you want to attend a really interesting and unique excursion, try to look for a good private guide on Facebook or Vk.com by typing “spb roofer”.

A visit to a communal flat

Communal flats are apartments with many rooms, where every family lives in a separate room and shares other facilities like the kitchen, bathroom and toilet, with other families who live in that flat. They were very widespread in the Soviet times, when the government confiscated the large  flats owned by the then rich citizens and allocated it to the ordinary folks. Nowadays, you can still find this type of accommodation, although the majority of the people prefer to rent or own their own flats. However, communal flats are a perfect attraction for nostalgic tourists.

The Udelka market

Udelka is a legendary second-hand goods market in Saint-Petersburg. Here you can buy cheap fake famous brands, vintage furniture and clothes, traditional souvenirs, vinyl records and players and anything else your heart desires. That’s a real socio-cultural phenomenon that’s better to be seen with one’s own eyes.

The Street Art Museum

This museum is certainly a must see if you like contemporary art. It was born thanks to  Maecenas who wanted to give aspiring artists a place, where they could show their works to the world. He bought a Laminated Plastics factory where the artists could create their murals wherever they wanted. The Museum has two separate zones — a permanent exposition on the factory territory and open public space — the venue for temporary exhibitions and large-scale events. The factory space hidden from public eye is where the permanent exposition of wall paintings or «murals» made by contemporary artists is. Now it has more than 20 art works of modern street artists such as P183, Tima Radya, Kirill Kto, Nikita Nomerz, Escif and many others.  Because the factory is still functional, you will need to book your visit in advance, as this requires an official pass.

It seems hard to hide something in the middle of Nevsky prospect, but some people manage to do this. “Kvartira Kosti Kroiza” is a restaurant opened in the most expensive apartment of the city. However, to get inside you need to get a reservation and a digital key from the website that you will type in the intercom of what seems to be just an ordinary house.

The concept of this place was to create a space for businessmen, journalists and creative people. It’s interior is luxurious with furniture from all over the world. The menu is pretty diverse and original, where cuisines of different countries are mixed in an inimitable whole.

Address:

71 Nevsky Prospekt

Metro station:

Gostiny Dvor
