Have you been in a situation, where you feel depressed and go to a bar to get some perspective over a few strong drinks and the bartender’s listening ear, just to have your pity party ruined by the ‘happy customers’? Then the freshly opened Ugryumochnaya bar in Saint Petersburg is just the right spot for you!

The name of the place is a play on words, a combination of “gloomy” and “bar” in Russian. Abandon joy all ye who enter here – no offence, but this is a territory for sad people only. Inside you’ll find yourself in a dark room with obscure lighting, black walls, and dozens of hanging glasses on the ceilings to set the melancholic atmosphere.

The counterman will welcome you with a special “funeral shot” with a slice of bread and salt, according to the ancient Russian traditions.

What to do next is up to you: the staff encourages guests to express their feelings freely. If you came to have a good cry, you’ll find an applicable vest on the wall (Russians look for “a vest” instead of  “a shoulder” to cry on).

If you’d prefer calming down and pulling yourself together, then ask a bartender for counselling (this doesn’t look serious at first, but all the staff have passed psychological aid courses). Feel shy and want to stay anonymous? Then use an old landline phone hanging on the wall. You can choose the problem bothering you, for example, break-up or job conflict, via voice menu and get some professional advice.

Ugryumochnaya’s menu includes a whole set of strong drinks, classic cocktails, such as Mojito or Bloody Mary, but for a full experience we’d suggest taking their topic-based specialties: Mayakovsky, served in a handgun, or Breaking Bad in test-tubes. If it’s a pity party for two, afterall, misery loves company, then order the Mortal combat set: 5 shots from both sides, with juice as a chaser for the winner in the middle. And keep in mind: if you cry, your drink is on the house!
