Like the other Russian cities, Samara has experienced the horrors of war. First the Civil War of 1917 — 1922, that marked the end of Imperial Russia and the beginning of socialist Russia eras. Followed by the World War II that was hard fought right on the country’s territory. Every Russian city has played its part in these events in its own unique way. To better understand the history of Samara, visit these 5 signature monuments.
Monument of Glory
Standing high above the banks of the Volga, the Monument of Glory is a huge figure bearing a pair of wings in upraised arms. That is because Samara was the center of the aviation and aircraft construction industries during WWII. The monument was built in 1971 to symbolize a worker and a fighter, and honor the contribution of Samara’s citizens to Russia’s victory in WWII.

It is an authentic Ilyushin Il-2 Sturmovik, a WWII ground-attack aircraft manufactured in Samara. This very aircraft was shot down in active combat. Found about 25 years later in the Karelian swamps and completely restored, it recognizes the heroic deeds of WWII pilots and aviation workers.

Monument to child homefront workers in 1941–1945
War knows no age, and during WWII even children put their textbooks and toys aside and worked at Samara’s factories alongside the adults. These two bronze figures on a marble pedestal pay tribute to the teenagers and children who had to leave their childhood behind and toil early in life to stand up for their country.

Born near Samara, Vasiliy Chapaev was a Red Army commander during the Russian Civil War. History has preserved the stories of his heroism and today he remains one of the symbols of bravery and wit. Therefore, it is no wonder that Samara wanted to have a monument to their countryman who fought so daringly for what he believed was a better future. The monument was erected in 1932 and at the time was one of the biggest in the country — 10 meters high and 17 by 22 at the foundation.
